The Avalon Theatre will screen the award-winning thriller Victim (Obět’) by director Michal Blaško on March 13, 2024, at 8 pm, as part of the ongoing Lions of Czech Film Series, bringing top Czech films to the Washington, DC community. The film is in Czech with English subtitles.

When the son of Ukrainian immigrant Irina is attacked, the whole city stands up in solidarity with her family and condemns their Roma neighbors who allegedly committed the crime. As time passes, Irina begins to spot inconsistencies in her son’s story. Victim is a suspenseful drama about a woman seeking justice, torn between family and the search for truth.
The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and was nominated for four prestigious Czech Lions in 2023, including best director, film, actress, and screenplay. It also won the 2023 Czech Film Critics’ Award for Newcomer of the Year – Michal Blaško (director). The film was the Slovak entry for the Oscars.
The screening is organized as part of Czech That Film in cooperation with Czech Centres. The film is also being screened in collaboration with the Embassy of the Czech Republic and the Embassy of the Slovak Republic.
