The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Ulaanbaatar, in cooperation with the Mongolian State Conservatory and the Šikulka private music and dance school, organized the Mongolian round of the Smetana Piano Competition for the fourth time, the finalists of which will take part in the international round in Pilsen on 19-24 April 2021.
This year - due to restrictions related to COVID - the contestants sent their performances via video recordings and more than fifty artists aged six to eighteen participated, not only from Mongolia, but also from the Mongolian diaspora living in the USA. The winners were announced on September 12 in the State Conservatory building with the participation of the Ambassador of the Czech Republic Jiří Brodský and his spouse, Consul Václav Dobeš, founder of the Šikulka school and organizer of the Mongolian round, pianist Tunsag Tsolmon, and Gerel Ganchimeg, director of the Classical Mongolian State Conservatory School. The main prize of the jury, whose member was also the director of the Pilsen Conservatory Miroslav Brejcha, was won by fifteen-year-old Chosbajar Chuslen (with his performance of Smetana's concert etude "On the Seashore").
This year, held as part of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Czechoslovakia and Mongolia, met with great interest from the Mongolian media and the Embassy also supported the creation of Mongolian documentary about the competition and Czech classical music from funds earmarked for public diplomacy.
