Mongolia Marks Another Tourist Trail, Czechia to Add Educational Elements

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – On Sunday, May 5, a six-kilometer loop around Chingeltei Mountain, south of the capital, was marked in blue. The event was attended by several hundred tourists, and during the happening, a contract was signed between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, represented by Ambassador Jan Vytopil, and the Mongolian Walking Association (MWA), represented by Chairman Bolor-Erdene Baatar. This contract will enable the implementation of educational elements focused on nature and landscape protection along the hiking trail on the Dugui Tsagaan mountain range. This most popular hiking location was first marked in 2023. The educational boards will be supplied by the Czech company Lesní svět.

The spread of the Czech tourist marking system began last fall with the signing of a licensing agreement between the MWA and the Czech Tourist Club (KČT), which joined Mongolia to the countries using our tourist markings. This year, MWA members marked a second trail and plan two more in different regions of Mongolia. The idea of expanding the marking system into Mongolian national parks to improve their accessibility was among other things discussed in March in Prague between Mongolian Minister of Tourism and Environment Bat-Erdene and Czech Minister for Regional Development Ivan Bartoš.

"Mongolia abolished the visa requirement for tourists from the entire EU last year, clearly opening up to travelers. I am glad that the Czech Republic is helping them with this and is perceived as a strong partner," said Ambassador Vytopil. "Mongolia needs to diversify its economy, which is mainly dependent on mineral resources. However, this beautiful country has enormous potential in tourism, and Czech companies are ready to invest in this sphere."

Mongolia faces dramatic impacts of climate change in the form of excessive grazing and deforestation, which affects water supply. There are many initiatives for forest restoration, but they often fail due to a lack of awareness. While people in the countryside face forest decline daily, the situation is not as apparent in cities.

The Dugui Tsagaan trail in the Bogd-Khan mountains south of Ulaanbaatar aims to raise awareness of the importance of forests through educational elements custom-made by the company Lesní svět. This was the first to be marked by the Czech system in September 2023 and is used by thousands of tourists weekly, making it the most visited hiking location. MWA hopes that the trail will serve as a model for the entire country. The information boards will focus on forest protection and their significance for water security, with content professionally guaranteed by Mendel University.
