From June 9 to 13, 2025, a business mission of the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic, led by the Deputy Minister Mr. David Surý, took place in Mongolia. The mission focused on sharing Czech experience in the field of circular economy, extended producer responsibility (EPR), waste recycling, and support for technological solutions in the environmental sector.
The delegation visited the capital city of Ulaanbaatar and the regional metropolis of Erdenet. Key meetings were held with the leadership of the Mongolian Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, led by the Minister's Advisor and Special Envoy for Climate, Mr. P. Batkhishig, the Director of the Department of Natural Resources Policy and Implementation, Mr. G. Enkhmunkh, and the Director of the Department of International Cooperation, Mr. N. Enkhtaivan. The Czech Ambassador to Mongolia, Jan Vytopil, also attended the meeting. The participants discussed possibilities for cooperation at the legislative, expert and business levels, including considerations for a pilot project. The Czech side offered its know-how in the areas of EPR, plastic waste recycling and innovations in waste management. Director General Surý also invited his Mongolian partners to visit Czechia.
The delegation also held talks at the Ulaanbaatar City Council, where the Czech side was welcomed by the city's chief manager, Mr. G. Batzorig, and the director of the Department of Environmental Management and Waste, Mr. B. Munkh-erdene. Here, too, the willingness to establish concrete cooperation was expressed, particularly in the area of municipal sorting and recycling systems.
On the second day of the mission, a round table discussion was held, bringing together more than 30 participants from academic institutions, non-governmental organizations, private companies, and public administration. In addition to Czech companies and experts, Mr. Ts. Bold, advisor to the mayor of the capital city, gave a presentation on Ulaanbaatar's priorities in the field of waste management. The discussion focused on sharing experiences and opportunities for cooperation between professional institutions in both countries.
During the mission, the delegation also visited the Tsagaan Davaa landfill on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar and the operations of Multipak, Bloom Plastic, Elektrochem, and TML Plastic. In the regional city of Erdenet, the delegation met with the governor of Orchon Province, Mr. B. Zorigbayar and visited a local pilot recycling center, which serves as an example of the integration of solid waste processing into the regional sustainability strategy.
The mission confirmed that the Czech Republic has much to offer in the field of environmental technologies and policies and that the Mongolian side perceives the Czech Republic as a competent and respected partner. At the same time, it showed that, in addition to institutional and technical solutions, it is equally important to continuously strengthen public awareness and education in the field of waste sorting and responsible consumption.
