Czech School in Toronto and a creative morning at the Consulate General

The roots of Czech language education in Toronto run deep, stretching back to a pivotal era in Czechoslovak history. Established in 1929, the Czech School in Toronto holds the distinction of being the oldest institution of its kind worldwide. Since 1943, it has operated without interruption under the wing of the Masaryk Memorial Institute, bolstered for decades by the Czech Republic’s programs for supporting Bohemistic studies.

Today, the school remains a vital pillar for families in the Greater Toronto Area, ensuring that the Czech language, culture, and traditions thrive in the hearts of younger generations. Classes are held every Tuesday and Saturday.

On Saturday, April 11, 2026, the school community took their learning outside the classroom. Students, accompanied by their teachers and parents, paid a special visit to the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Toronto. Consul General Radek Machů and his team hosted an engaging, creative morning designed to pull back the curtain on diplomatic life. The visit was far from a formal lecture; the children took center stage, performing a charming program of traditional rhymes and songs, which then led into a knowledge quiz comparing Canada and the Czech Republic. The event concluded with an open discussion with the parents.

After the gathering, class teacher Jari Campanelli expressed her sincere thanks for the organization of the event. She also highlighted the importance of the long-standing support that both the Czech state and the Consulate General have provided to ensure that the Czech language and culture continue to flourish in Toronto.
