Between the days 6 and 13 January 2019 the Czech ice-hockey team participated in the IIHF World Women’s U18 Championship which took place in the Japanese city Obihiro.
8 teams in total divided into two groups participate in this category of the World Championship and this year, the Czech players found themselves in one group with Japan, Switzerland and Finland. The Czech team lost the first match to Switzerland 0:1, nevertheless, in the next match the Czechs won 4: 2 against the home team Japan. In the following match with Finland, the Czech players needed to get at least 3 points in order to advance to the semi-finals. When the score was 1:1, the Czechs decided to pull the goalkeeper and tried to score a goal but the opponents made use of this opportunity and scored an empty-net goal 26 seconds before the end of the game.
Instead of the desired semi-finals, the Czech team had to then fight with Japan in the relegation round where the teams play a best-of-three relegation round series in order to stay in the elite group. In the first match the Czechs defeated the home team 6:0 but the second match was more successful for the Japanese who won the game 2:1. Both teams then had to play a decisive third game on the last day of the Championship which was ultimately more successful for the Czech players who were led by the captain Adéla Škrdlová. The Czechs defeated Japan 3:1 and secured themselves a spot in the next World Championship which is likely to be held at the beginning of 2020 in Sweden.
The best player of the Czech team was the 16-year-old goalkeeper Julie Pejšová and the most productive players were the attackers Kristýna Kaltounková and Natálie Mlýnková.
