The Chargé d'Affaires a.i., Mr. Tomáš Kára, took part in this year’s 81st anniversary commemoration at the Peace Memorial Ceremony in the city of Hiroshima, which was held on August 6, 2026, in the presence of Prime Minister of Japan Ms. Sanae Takaichi. During the ceremony, he joined other participants in honoring the memory of the victims of this historic and tragic event. 

81 years ago, the atomic bomb Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima. This event is commemorated by the Peace Memorial building, also known as the Atomic Dome, which stands in the center of Hiroshima only 160 meters from the hypocenter of the explosion. The building was originally designed and constructed in 1915 by Czech architect Jan Letzel and served as the Hiroshima Prefectural Palace for product exhibitions. In 1996, the building was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. 

Subsequently, the Chargé d'Affaires a.i., Mr. Tomáš Kára, attended the second Peace Memorial Ceremony in the city of Nagasaki on August 9, 2026. After Hiroshima, Nagasaki was the second city to be hit by an atomic bomb during World War II in 1945. The “National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims” in Nagasaki, completed in 2002, serves as a place where visitors can remember those who lost their lives as a result of the atomic bombing and offer prayers for eternal peace.
