This year, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki marked the 79th anniversary of the dropping of atomic bombs, which was one of the events leading to the capitulation of Japan in World War II.
The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Tokyo represented by Mrs. Vladimíra Hirsh, Deputy Head of Mission, was present at the Peace Ceremony in Hiroshima on 6th August 2024. This year Prime Minister Fumio Kishida held the speech and with other participants honored the memory of the victims of this historical tragic event. Afterwards, the Deputy Head of Mission took part in the second Peace Ceremony hold in Nagasaki on 9th August 2024.
It was 79 years ago when the Little Boy atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. The Peace Memorial building, also known as the Atomic Dome, is located in central Hiroshima, just 160 meters from the blast. The building was initially designed and built in 1915 by the Czech architect Jan Letzl, it served as the Hiroshima Prefectural Palace for product exhibitions. In 1996, the building was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Nagasaki was the second city where a nuclear bomb was dropped in 1945 during World War II. The Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, which construction was finished in 2002, is a place where visitors may commemorate those who lost their lives as a result of the atomic bombing and offer prayers for everlasting peace.
