Czech Ambassador honored the memory of fallen Czechoslovak legionaries in Fuchu

On November 11, 2024, the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Japan together with the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Japan and leading Japanese historians honored the memory of fallen Czechoslovak legionnaires at the cemetery in Fuchu.

On the occasion of the Veterans Day (November 11), the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Tokyo commemorates this important event every year by laying wreaths at the memorial to Czechoslovak legionnaires in Fuchu, located on the outskirts of Tokyo.

The commemoration ceremony was attended this year by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Japan, Mr. Martin Klučar, together with the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Japan, Mr. Ivan Surkoš, accompanied by a group of leading Japanese historians - Mr. Susumu Nagaya, emeritus professor of Waseda University, Mr. Hiroshi Fukuda, professor of Seijo University, Mr. Mashine and Mr. Taku Shinohara, vice-president of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.

The monument in Fuchu commemorates five Czechoslovak legionnaires who died in Japanese hospitals or on a ship while returning to the emerging Czechoslovakia in 1918 and 1919. Czechoslovak legionnaires who fought against the Bolsheviks in Russia and who returned to their homeland after successful battles were warmly received in Japan and wounded legionnaires treated. The author of the monument is academic painter Pavel Holý from the Military Historical Institute of the Czech Republic.
