Screening: Summer School, 2001 at V4 Film Days

The entertaining drama Summer School, 2001 by director Dužan Duong will be screened in Sweden for the first time as part of the Visegrad Film Days 2026 festival. Admission is free upon registration via the form in the event description.
Visegrad Film Days will present contemporary films from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary over four days (9–12 March 2026) at the independent cinema Zita. All films will be shown in their original language with English subtitles.
The Czech selection will be the witty drama Summer School, 2001, which premiered on 24 July 2025 at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
About the film
Summer 2001. Seventeen-year-old Kien with a bright red haircut returns to his family in a market in Cheb after ten years in Vietnam. Instead of a warm welcome, he is greeted by an estranged father, a worried mother and a younger brother who gives him nothing. In between ironing Pok.mon onto T-shirts, practicing Czech and dating by the lake, a secret surface that will turn the life of the market upside down... Told with lightness and wit, director Duzan Duong’s film provides an authentic look into the community through the eyes of the first Vietnamese generation to grow up in the Czech Republic.

About the film: Jurek, along with his father-in-law Ben, confronts the loss of a loved one and decides to perform the Chinese ritual of minghun – a post-mortem wedding. The clash of the two very distinct cultures is there to help make both the protagonists and the viewers aware of the fact that regardless of our origin, we all belong to one human family where basic emotions are shared.
