Science Festival Gothenburg 2025: Nikola Schmidt

Dr Nikola Schmidt, Czech researcher and head of the Centre for Governance of Emerging Technologies at the Institute of International Relations in Prague, will make an appearance at the Gothenburg Science Festival 2025. His talk will focus on the current issue of planetary defence and humanity's preparedness for a potential asteroid impact.

About the event: In 2024, the probability of Earth colliding with asteroid YR2024 increased to 3.1%. Although the risk was subsequently reduced to below 1%, this incident has sparked a fundamental debate: Are we ready to face a similar threat?

Nikola Schmidt (*1982) has long been involved in space security, climate change, and new technologies. In his talk, he will outline strategies and scenarios that could be used in planetary defense. Schmidt participated in a NASA-funded planetary defense project at the International Space University in 2015 and later in a TAČR-funded, four-year project to develop planetary defense and space mining strategies for the Czech Republic.
