Dr Nikola Schmidt, Czech researcher and head of the Centre for Governance of New Technologies at the Institute of International Relations in Prague, will make an appearance at the Gothenburg Science Festival 2025. His talk will focus on the current issue of planetary defence and humanity's preparedness for a potential asteroid impact.
About the event: In 2024, the probability of Earth colliding with asteroid YR2024 has increased to 3.1%. Although the risk has subsequently been reduced to below 1%, this incident has opened a fundamental debate: Are we ready to face a similar threat?
Nikola Schmidt (*1982) has long been involved in space security, climate change and new technologies. In his talk, he will outline strategies and scenarios that could be used in planetary defence. Schmidt was part of a NASA-funded planetary defense project that led to international research that looked not only at asteroid defense, but also at the future of mining in space and the implications of technological innovation for global security.
