About the Film
The film "Waves" by Jiří Mádl brings to light gripping and previously unknown stories of journalists from Czechoslovak Radio. At the end of the 1960s, when rock ’n’ roll was broadcasted over the airwaves and student revolts were changing the world, the elder of the Havlík brothers joins the prestigious radio newsroom. Soon, he finds himself in a dangerous conflict between reporters and the secret police. In the whirlwind of events, everyone’s life is at risk, and the main character faces a tough choice: to protect his brother or stand for truth and his colleagues. The film is inspired by the true story of a group of journalists from the international newsroom of Czechoslovak Radio and their determination to deliver independent news at all costs during a crisis that culminated in the Warsaw Pact invasion in August 1968.
"Waves" is this year’s Czech Oscar contender in the Best International Feature Film category.
