This year's first issue of the Magazine (attached) of the royal guard in Sweden was devoted to Kladruby horses. Every year from mid-April to early September, visitors of Stockholm are able to watch the ceremonial changing of the guard several times a week, consisting of 48 or 52 riders on horses, of which 18 are musicians. Among the horses are also the majestic white horses of the National Stud Farm in Kladruby nad Labem, which is on UNESCO’s cultural heritage list and is located 60 km from Prague. Since 2004, the Swedish Royal Guard purchased nine Kladruby horses and is now buying two more. The horses are especially valued for their quiet nature, they are especially useful for members of the Royal Guard of musicians, and their amazing charisma.
The stud farm was founded in 1579 in order to breed a hefty draft horses with Spanish blood intended for use at the imperial court. The stud farm burned down in 1757, but the breeds were saved and in 1799 horses of Italian origin were imported and these horses that are now considered the founders of the local livestock thoroughbred white horses. Breeding was very difficult to maintain, especially after the establishment of Czechoslovakia, when the horses used at the imperial court in Vienna were not returned, and in addition the last two stallions in Kladruby died. It was a great joy that two colts were born, making the breeding preserved.
In 2014, the reconstruction of old stables including renovation of 20 buildings began and cost about 300 mil. CZK. During the construction work, the gold and marble plaque was found. The historical piece was from the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I, who spent the night at a local chateau, along with Empress Elisabeth, who was an excellent rider. The Empress even tried the circuit Velká Pardubická Steeplechase, one of the most difficult obstacle courses in the world. The stud farm was officially reopened after the reconstruction in June 2016.
