It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of JUDr. Karel Komárek, chargé d’affaires of the Czech Republic in the Democratic Republic of Congo, on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
"It is with great sadness that I received the news of the death of my esteemed colleague Karel Komárek, who during his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs represented Czech interests primarily in the field of multilateral diplomacy. With his wide-ranging experience, he also made a significant contribution to building relations between the Czech Republic and sub-Saharan Africa, both at headquarters and during his posting in the region," said the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Karel Komárek worked for many years at the Permanent Delegation of the Czech Republic to UNESCO in Paris, and was twice posted to the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, where he headed the political section from 2016 to 2020. From 2010 to 2016, he held several important positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters, where he headed the conventional weapons section within the UN department, was coordinator for the Human Rights Council, and from 2013 to 2016 was chief secretary of the Secretariat of the Czech Commission for UNESCO. Mr. Karel Komárek then worked in the Sub-Saharan Africa Department and, from October 2023, headed the Czech Embassy in the Democratic Republic of Congo as chargé d'affaires.
We express our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
