Škoda Trains for Sweden & Czech Companies at Elmia Subcontractor

Last week brought significant developments for Czech engineering in Sweden.
On November 11, a ceremonial signing took place in Stockholm between the regional railway operator Saltsjöbanan and Škoda Group/Škoda Transportation for the delivery of trains worth EUR 230 million. In southern Sweden, the Elmia Subcontractor engineering trade fair was held in Jönköping from November 11 to 13, featuring a record number of Czech companies.

Contract for Škoda Group

Škoda Group/Škoda Transportation committed to supplying the

regional railway operator with sixteen two-car train units, with an option for an additional fifteen. The contract, including maintenance and staff training, is valued at EUR 230 million. The signing ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Sweden, Radek Matula, who supported this major Czech investment in the Swedish market.

The new train units represent a major step toward modernizing Saltsjöbanan. Designed for Nordic conditions and drawing on the expertise of Škoda’s Finnish subsidiary, Škoda Transtech, they will offer greater reliability, lower maintenance costs, and improved passenger comfort. Features include propane-based air conditioning, digital information systems, dedicated spaces for bicycles and strollers, and the ability to couple units to increase capacity during peak hours.

Deliveries will begin in 2029, with the first unit expected to roll out in 2028. This timeline coincides with the completion of extensive infrastructure upgrades, including new stations, double-track sections, and a connection to Stockholm’s blue metro line to Nacka. These investments aim to boost capacity, shorten travel times, and provide a greener alternative to car transport in the Stockholm region.

“The success of Škoda Group serves as an inspiration for other Czech companies seeking to enter the Swedish and broader Nordic markets”, stated Ambassador Matula.

Another highlight was the official Czech participation in the Elmia Subcontractor engineering trade fair in Jönköping, held from November 11 to 13. The fair was officially opened by Deputy Ambassador Jaromír Vejrych, who introduced the concept of “Czech Engineering Week in Sweden” and emphasized the importance of Škoda Group’s breakthrough entry into the Swedish market with a final product. He also shared positive economic indicators from Sweden:

  • 13.5% year-on-year growth in industrial production,
  • increasing order volumes,
  • the best Purchasing Managers’ Index figures in years,
  • and rising consumer confidence in the economy.

Sixteen Czech companies exhibited as part of the official participation organized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, while additional firms were supported by the CzechTrade Scandinavia team. The event confirmed the growing interest of Czech businesses in the Swedish market and their ability to offer competitive solutions.
