Czech music lecture in Shanghai

On June 12, 2023, the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Shanghai, in cooperation with East China Normal University (ECNU) and Mr. Richard Pohl, organized Czech music lessons for piano students of the ECNU Faculty of Arts.

Consul General of the Czech Republic in Shanghai, Karel Šrol, opened the day-long event with a welcoming speech, followed by a speech from the party secretary of the university, Mrs. Zhao Jingjing.

The music lecture offered general overview of the rich history of Czech piano music and important composers such as Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák, Leoš Janáček and many others. Presentation also included information about the system of music education in the Czech Republic from its roots to the present day, as well as the current possibilities of studying in the Czech Republic. Czech music education is one of the most sophisticated in the world and boasts one of the densest networks of public art schools in Europe.

The lesson was taught by MgA. Richard Pohl, Ph.D., Czech pianist and teacher, graduate of the State Conservatory in Brno and the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno. He currently lives in China, where he teaches both at universities and privately. Mr. Richard Pohl enriched his expert lecture by performing musical samples from selected works by Czech composers, giving attending students closer look into the vibrant history of Czech piano music. In the afternoon, the lecture continued in the form of individual lessons for selected ECNU students.
