EES - New border management system introduced for short-stay visits in the EU

Starting from 12 October 2025, a new border management system called Entry/Exit System (EES) will be used for registering non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay (up to 90 days within a 180-day period), each time they cross the external borders of EU member states.
Travellers´ data will be registered, regardless of whether they need a short-stay visa or they are visa-free travellers.
Data to be registered include the following:
- - personal data from the travel document,
- - date and place of each entry to and exist from the 29 EU countries,
- - biometric data (facial image and/or fingerprints).
The EES will be deployed gradually across the external borders of the EU member states over a period of 6 months. During this phase, travellers’ biometric data might not be collected at every border crossing point right away, and their personal information may not be registered in the system. Passports will continue to be stamped as usual. This progressive implementation will last until 9 April 2026.
The registered travellers´ data will be stored in the EES in full compliance with EU data protection rules and rights for the period of 3 years.
