Věra 68 and Olga Sommerová in Riga

On Saturday, April 22, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Riga hosted an event to commemorate Věra Čáslavská by screening of the movie Věra 68 at K-Suns cinema with follow-up discussion with the director Olga Sommerová in the premises of the embassy.
Before the beginning of the film Věra 68 the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Latvia HE Miroslav Kosek and director of the movie Olga Sommerová made their small speeches. The movie was screened in Czech language with English subtitles and simultaneous translation into Latvian. The guests could see the life story, sports achievements and ups and downs of Věra Čáslavská, her moments of sporting peak and years of neglect, her return to public life as adviser to President V. Havel, the tragic fate of her family, the following years of despair and hopelessness and return to social activity. The closing titles were accompanied by long applause.
During the meeting at the embassy, the guests could overview the small exhibition of Vera Čáslavská's photographs made during her sport career, Tokyo and Mexican Olympics, as adviser to Vaclav Havel and late period.
The subsequent discussion with Olga Sommerová along with the personality of Vera Čáslavská and Věra 68 touched such aspects as similar fate of the Baltic republics and Czechoslovakia, the role of women in leadership positions, the role of civil society and the importance to defend a democracy. Then, the conversation with the charismatic director flowed into an informal part with friendly spirit and lasted till the very evening.
The announcement of the commemorative event was broadcast by Latvian radio, so, Věra 68 movie and the meeting with Olga Sommerová was met by Latvian public with a great interest.
Olga Sommerová‘s visit to Latvia is a part of her Baltic tour - with the film Sedm světel in Vilnius, Věra 68 in Riga and two parts of the trilogy Mluvčí Charty 77 in Tallinn.
