The Visegrad Four at Visegrad Castle

At midnight on 1 July 2011, Hungary passed the Presidency of the Council of the EU on to Poland. At the same moment, the Czech Republic took over the one-year Presidency of the Visegrad Group. How will we use the year, sometimes labelled „The Year of Central Europe“, to good effect?

In 1335, the same spot saw the Czech King John the Blind, King Charles I of Hungary and King Casimir III the Great of Poland forging an anti-Hapsburg coalition. And in 1991, representatives of the then-Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland agreed to cooperate in their efforts to join the EU.
