Delegation of the Czech Senate visited Palestine

On 10 November 2021, a delegation of the Committee on Economy, Agriculture and Transport of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic led by the Vice Chairman of the Senate Jiří Oberfalzer visited Palestine. At the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce, the delegation held talks with the Minister of National Economy, Khaled al-Osaily, met with the Chamber's leadership, headed by its President and the Czech Honorary Consul Samir Hazboun, and concluded the visit with a tour in the production plant of Nassar Stone, one of Palestine's largest exporters.

At the meeting with the Minister of National Economy, the two delegations agreed on the need to work on improving cooperation in the economic field and to promote trade, which falls short of the possibilities of both countries. It would be helpful to introduce more frequent contacts between businesses of the two countries, or strengthening cooperation between their chambers of commerce. Opportunities exist, for example, in agriculture and food processing, but also in the energy sector, where the Czech Republic can build on its successful development cooperation, as well as in tourism. Palestine is interested in foreign investment and is working to improve the investment environment - a new law on enterprises, based on consultations with the World Bank, has recently been approved, and a new investment law is being prepared.

The Senate delegation also visited the Nassar Stone natural stone processing plant. The company was founded in 1973, has production facilities in Jordan and Oman in addition to the Bethlehem plant, and exports natural stone-based building materials worldwide. The company is also one of the largest Palestinian exporters, as building and cladding stone represents the most important item in Palestinian exports.
