The Embassy supported Czech-Norwegian cooperation in the battery industry

The mission of Czech research institutions and companies associated in the Czech Battery Cluster to Norway proved that both countries can successfully develop joint activities in the field of battery industry and related research in the future. Thanks to the economic diplomacy project, the Czech participants had the opportunity to establish valuable contacts with the most important stakeholders in the Norwegian battery segment and to identify concrete opportunities for cooperation. These include electrochemical research, the development of related digital systems, energy storage or the end-of-life treatment of batteries.

The development of battery technology and battery production capacity in Europe is one of the important initiatives on the road to strengthening European energy independence. In recent years, Norway has taken steps to become actively involved in this process. In Czechia, interesting initiatives are also underway in this segment, including research. The battery industry has solid potential for further development in both countries. Therefore, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Oslo, with the financial support of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic, has brought together Czech and Norwegian actors (companies and research institutions) in the battery industry in order to exchange know-how and to map the possibilities for cooperation in this innovative and promising field. This opportunity was used by representatives of the Czech Battery Cluster and its associated research institutions - Brno University of Technology, Central European Institute of Technology, Czech Technical University, J. Heyrovsky Institute of Physical Chemistry and company Tiyo. Their joint mission visited Norway from 19-23 May 2025. Meetings were held at the SINTEF Battery Research Centre, with representatives of the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise of the Trøndelag region, Morrow Batteries, Elinor Batteries, Beyonder, Vianode, University of Agder and the Institute for Energy Technology.

The mission demonstrated the promising potential of mutual cooperation for both sides. During a working lunch with the mission participants, Ambassador David Červenka stressed that "in the field of battery technology, there is an interesting scope for the development of joint projects between the Czech and Norwegian businesses and scientific communities. Czechia has everything to offer from quality technical education, to some mineral resources, to the potential of its automotive industry. Relevant actors could complement each other in future activities." Among the promising areas identified by the participants in the debate were electrochemical research, the development of related digital solutions, integration of battery systems, environmentally friendly end-of-life treatment of batteries, testing and modelling or automation in the battery industry. Representatives of the Czech Battery Cluster appreciated the contribution of the mission to identify concrete plans for further cooperation.
