Screening of the documentary War correspondent at the premises of the Czech Mission

On May 13, 2025, the Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic to the UN, OSCE and other International Organizations, in cooperation with the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the International Organizations in Vienna, organized a screening of the documentary War Correspondent, dedicated to the work of Czech war correspondent Martin Dorazín. Invited guests also reflected on the role of the media in conflicts, including in the context of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, the Czech Mission welcomed guests from the diplomatic community, international organizations, media, and the general public to the screening of War Correspondent, directed by Benjamin Tuček and David Čálek. The event was opened by Ambassadors Ivo Šrámek (Czech Republic) and Yurii Vitrenko (Ukraine), who emphasized the need for continued international attention to Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine and the importance of supporting independent media in the OSCE region. The keynote address was delivered by OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Ambassador Jan Braathu, who highlighted the OSCE’s activities in the field of media freedom, and underlined the crucial role of independent journalism in countering disinformation campaigns. The screening was introduced by Ukrainian co-producer of the documentary, Ms. Natalia Khazan.

The documentary War Correspondent explores, through the lens of reporter Martin Dorazín, the everyday lives of ordinary people exposed to the long-term impacts of war. It reveals the real source of power that determines the course of wars—not battlefield victories, but the resilience of civilians. Regardless of which side claims victory, people will continue to live where they have always lived. The film examines societal resilience through the eyes of a war correspondent, illustrated by Dorazín’s radio reports. Beyond the immediate context of war, it conveys a broader message: a society is only as strong as its weakest individual. Defeat rarely occurs where people stand together, as unity itself increases the chances of collective survival. This theme resonates even with societies not directly affected by war. The documentary tells the stories of people directly impacted by war, offering a first-hand perspective on the consequences of Russia´s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, while highlighting the broader context of war and the vital importance of war journalism.

As part of the evening, guests had also the opportunity to write letters to Ukrainian political prisoners.
