OSCE Mediterranean Conference

On 25 - 26 October 2018, the annual OSCE Mediterranean Conference was held in Málaga, Spain. The importance of the energy sector for an economic growth and co-operation in the Mediterranean was the main topic of the Conference.

The OSCE Mediterranean Conference is an important platform for the OSCE´s dialogue with the Mediterranean partners (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Morocco, and Tunisia). This year's Conference was organized by the Slovak Chairmanship of the OSCE Mediterranean Contact Group together with Spain. The Czech Republic was represented by Amb. Ivo Šrámek, Permanent Representative to the OSCE.

The main theme was the importance of the energy sector for economic growth and co-operation in the Mediterranean. Participants of the Conference agreed that energy issues are also closely linked to national security. Furthermore, participants also discussed environmental challenges and climate change issues that need to be tackled collectively.

Ambassador Šrámek emphasized in his speech the strong link between European and Mediterranean security. It is therefore essential to ensure the interconnection of transport infrastructure between the South and the North. At the same time, it is important to ensure the diversification of resources, sustainable energy supplies, and to strengthen the environmental aspect. An important role in this area is played by the OSCE in the form of energy diplomacy, which should lead to enhanced energy security.
