Around 1800 government and civil society representatives, experts and human rights activists gathered in Warsaw for the two-week meeting taking place from 10 to 21 September.
HDIM is a conference organized by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) every year. It serves as a platform for reviewing the implementation of the commitments adopted by the governments in the fields of human rights, fundamental freedoms, democracy, tolerance, and non-discrimination. The conference is unique in that civil society groups have full access to working sessions and can discuss challenges with government representatives on an equal level and to have their voices heard before an international audience.
During the opening event of the conference, the speakers emphasized that the need to address today’s security challenges means that the defence and promotion of human rights are more important than ever. In addition to addressing a broad range of human rights and democracy issues, this year’s meeting featured specially selected topics on freedom of the media, rights of migrants and combating racism, xenophobia, intolerance, and discrimination. The regular working sessions are complemented by almost 90 side events that are focusing on specific human rights issues and country situations.
