The Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media (RFoM) held a conference dedicated to media freedom in volatile environments in Vienna on 19 and 20 June 2017. The conference dealt with issues related to current pressures and obstacles that endanger media freedom in areas affected by conflicts and crises.
More than 200 international experts, journalists, academics, diplomats, government officials and civil society representatives participated in the discussions. One of the main speakers was Kate Adie, former war correspondent and BBC's Chief News Correspondent, who delivered her keynote address at the outset of the conference. Main themes of the conference included so called "fake news", accreditations and access to information in conflict areas, media and digital literacy, safety of journalists and ending impunity for crimes committed against them.
