Former Czech Permanent Representative, Ambassador Ivo Šrámek, receives high Austrian state decoration

On Friday, 29 May, Ambassador Ivo Šrámek, former Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the United Nations, the OSCE and other international organisations in Vienna, was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold with Star for Services to the Republic of Austria. This high Austrian state decoration recognises Ambassador Šrámek’s long-standing contribution to multilateral diplomacy and to Czech-Austrian relations in Vienna. The award ranks among the highest grades of Austria’s Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria.

Ambassador Šrámek served as Czech Permanent Representative in Vienna from 2018 to 2025. During this period, he chaired a number of important multilateral fora, including the IAEA Board of Governors in 2022–2023, the Preparatory Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), the OSCE Human Dimension Committee, and the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ).

His diplomatic career also includes senior positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Deputy Minister for Security and Multilateral Issues, Political Director and Director General of the Multilateral Section. He previously served as Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Belgium, Ambassador to the Political and Security Committee of the EU, Deputy Permanent Representative to NATO and Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN.

Throughout his service in Vienna, Ambassador Šrámek was widely respected for his calm and fair approach, steady judgement and ability to guide demanding multilateral discussions constructively, including at times of heightened international tensions. His chairmanships and leadership roles across a broad spectrum of organisations reflected both his personal standing and the active engagement of the Czech Republic in multilateral diplomacy.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warmly congratulates Ambassador Šrámek on this distinguished recognition. The decoration is a fitting tribute to his outstanding diplomatic record and to his contribution to international cooperation in Vienna and beyond.

The award also reflects the long-standing and highly regarded engagement of the Czech Republic within the international organisations based in Vienna. This engagement is made possible not only through diplomacy, but also through the work of Czech experts and institutions that contribute to international cooperation in fields ranging from nuclear safety and security to arms control, crime prevention and human rights.

Ambassador Šrámek’s achievements stand as a visible example of that broader Czech contribution and of the respect it enjoys among international partners. A standing that Ambassador Šrámek himself has helped to build over many years of his dedicated service.
