On Tuesday, 29 October 2019, a joint meeting of the OSCE Security and Human Dimension Committees, dedicated to the topic of Preventing and combating violence against women, took place in Vienna. The joint meeting was organized by the Permanent Missions of the Czech Republic and Spain to the OSCE.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Šrámek as the Chair of the Human Dimension Committee stressed the importance of preventing and combating violence against women, which is one of the most persistent human rights violations in the OSCE region. The issue is one of the priorities for the OSCE and requires a cross-dimensional approach.
The OSCE participating States have committed to preventing and combating violence against women on several occasions, including in Ljubljana (2005), Basel (2014) and most recently in Milan (2018), as well as in the 2004 OSCE Action Plan for the Promotion of Gender Equality. Representatives of international organizations (Council of Europe, OSCE), the justice sector, participating States and the civil society took part in the discussion and shared their best practices and recommendations on how participating States can uphold their commitments to prevent and combat violence against women girls.
