At the 76th session of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), held in Geneva from October 6 to 10, the Czech national statement was delivered by Permanent Representative V. Bálek.
In his address, he highlighted UNHCR’s efforts toward a comprehensive approach to migration and asylum, which integrates protection, responsibility-sharing, and cooperation along the entire migration route. He also expressed deep concern over the growing number of forcibly displaced persons, which, according to the organization's projections, could exceed 136 million by 2026.
Czechia recalled its role in addressing the consequences of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Since the outbreak of the conflict, the country has provided refuge to nearly one million people, approximately 400,000 of whom continue to reside in the country under temporary protection. Thanks to close cooperation with local authorities and civil society, their integration into healthcare, education, and the labor market has been successfully supported.
At the same time, Czechia has been a long-term supporter of solutions to refugee crises beyond Europe. Over the past decade, it has contributed 25 million euros to UNHCR humanitarian activities in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. In 2025, it supported operations in Mauritania and Syria and is planning further assistance in Chad, focusing on refugees from Sudan.
