The Council of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) met from 26 to 28 November 2024. During the general debate, the Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic, Václav Bálek, appreciated the activities of the organization and emphasized its important role in reducing migration pressure on Europe, incl. in facilitating returns and reintegration of migrants into their countries of origin. He also recalled the Czech support to war-torn Ukraine and other countries on migration routes to Europe.
The IOM, under the leadership of Amy Pope, focuses on immediate assistance to migrants as well as on migration management, incl. border protection, fight against irregular migration or facilitation of legal migration pathways, reflecting labor market needs. The IOM has long signaled its readiness to support the EU with the implementation of its Pact on Migration and Asylum, including through the newly established Global Office in Brussels. IOM's long-term experience with returns and reintegration of migrants is appreciated by a number of member countries including the Czechia.
