On 10 – 14 October, the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) took place. Czech Chargé d'affaires Jitka Brodská spoke during the General Debate, while the Russian invasion of Ukraine was categorically condemned, and Russia called on to respect international humanitarian law.
Among others, the Czech representative mentioned that her country was the largest host of Ukrainian refugees per capita, with more than 440,000 people in absolute numbers, i. e. approximately 4% of the Czech population. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, the Czech aid of EUR 40 million has been allocated for humanitarian and stabilization efforts.
Despite the alarming situation in Ukraine, we must not forget the large-scale humanitarian crises outside the European continent. Over the last twelve years, the Czech efforts in cooperation with UNHCR have provided humanitarian aid amounting to EUR 22.8 million to displaced populations in countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Mali, Niger, Pakistan, and Syria.
