
Minister Lipavský at the UN Human Rights Council and Conference on Disarmament

Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský participated in the High-level Segment of the 49th session of the UN Human Rights Council on 1 March 2022. In his speech, he highlighted the importance of protection and promotion of human rights as main priorities of the Czech Government. Minister strongly condemned the Russian military aggression in Ukraine. He conveyed the same message also in the Conference on Disarmament.
In his speech at the UN Human Rights Council, Minister Lipavský spoke out against the unlawful and unprovoked military attack on Ukraine. „The human rights violations and suffering of innocent civilians of Ukraine resulting from the Russian aggression must end immediately. The threat of use of force to achieve any objective of the Kremlin is unacceptable for the Czech Republic which is a Member of the EU and NATO,“ he added. Minister Lipavský also condemned the recent steps by Russia as unacceptable during his remarks at the Conference on Disarmament. Minister called for immediate withdrawal of all Russian armed forces from the Ukrainian territory.
During a series of bilateral meetings, Minister Lipavský met with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet and reaffirmed about Czechia’s firm stance in respecting human rights. At a meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi Minister Lipavský stressed the humanitarian aid for Ukraine as well as in other places where needed.
Minister Lipavský also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom Liz Truss, they both agreed on the condemnation of the unlawful Russian attack against Ukraine. Furthermore, he held a meeting with the Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs Riyad al-Maliki and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of East Timor Adaljiza Magno. The main theme of the meetings was the current development in Ukraine. Ministers also discussed regional development, security issued and human rights.
