HRC33: Czech Republic supports High Commissioner’s independence, condemns non-cooperation

In an exchange of views with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra'ad Zeid al-Hussein, the Czech Republic has reaffirmed its support for an independent UN human rights architecture. The High Commissioner must be able to speak up against grave human rights violations wherever they occur, the Czech Republic said in a statement delivered on 14 September 2016 at the 33rd session of the Human Rights Council (HRC33).

The Czech Republic also expressed concern over systematic non-cooperation of some states facing serious human rights problems with the international community. “Involvement of the international community in country-specific challenges and crises is not meant to stigmatize any government or hurt a country's sovereignty - it is to help to address and prevent pressing human rights problems,” Czech Ambassador Jan Kára underlined in the statement (DOC, 25 KB).
