General Consul Ivo Losman visited the University of Sheffield on Thursday 30 May. Sheffield is one of only a few universities to offer courses in Czech language and culture to British students.
Prof. Neil Bermel, who teaches Czech and Russian at Sheffield and his colleague Luděk Knittl, introduced Mr. Losman to the Czech studies programme and to a number of their students of Czech. Mr. Losman also met with Prof. Susan Fitzmaurice, Vice-President and Head of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and Prof. Jan Windebank, Head of the School of Languages and Cultures, to discuss upcoming opportunities for co-operation with the University. He also visited a collection of manuscripts by Czech educationalist and philosopher Jan Ámos Komenský (Comenius), which were lost for many years but are now housed in the University Library.
