Watching the Jackals - A Lecture by Daniela Richterová

On Thursday, 19 February, a lecture by Daniela Richterová took place at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in London.

Dr Richterová, Senior Lecturer in Intelligence Studies at King’s College London, presented findings from her extensive research based on newly declassified archives. She explored the complex and often paradoxical relationships between Czechoslovakia and Middle Eastern terrorist and revolutionary groups during the 1970s and 1980s, examining why Prague became a hub for some of the era’s most prominent actors, how the country’s leadership responded to their presence, and the role played by the Czechoslovak security and intelligence apparatus.

The lecture drew on insights from her recent book, Watching the Jackals: Prague's Covert Liaisons with Cold War Terrorists and Revolutionaries (Georgetown University Press, 2025), offering fresh perspectives on Cold War intelligence history and the broader debate about the Soviet bloc’s relationship with terrorism.
