The Embassy of the Czech Republic in London hosted a ceremonial reception on Thursday, 9 October, to mark the national holiday of the Czech Republic – the Day of the Establishment of the Independent Czechoslovak State, celebrated on 28 October.
Guests were welcomed by Václav Bartuška, Ambassador of the Czech Republic, and remarks were also delivered by Sir Alex Beard, Chief Executive of the Royal Opera House, which encompasses both The Royal Ballet and The Royal Opera. Among the distinguished guests were notable members of the Czech community, including Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines, one of the last so-called “Winton’s children.”
The reception was attended by numerous prominent figures from the fields of science, culture, and business, as well as representatives of the British political scene, diplomats from other embassies in the United Kingdom, and members of the Czech veterans’ community.
The evening also featured a presentation of Czech culture and gastronomy. Guests had the opportunity to enjoy traditional Czech specialties, while the musical performances by Elizabeth Jiříčková and Alex Robinson contributed to the festive and friendly atmosphere of the event.
Škoda Auto also provided two vehicles for the occasion, including a true rarity – the Škoda 422 model. Produced between 1929 and 1932, it is the oldest Škoda car in the United Kingdom.
