Premiere of the Documentary Film “Hands on Glass”

On June 25th 2019 a premiere of the “Hands on Glass” (Ruky na skle) documentary took place at the cinema of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in London. The film explores the creation of the so-called “Farewell Memorial” dedicated by the so-called Winton’s children to their parents, A celebration of a significant life jubilee of an important compatriot and ‘Winton’s child’- Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines, MBE- was also a part of the programme. The event was organised by the Embassy of the Czech Republic and the Embassy of Slovakia in London.

The screening began with an introductory speech given by Ambassador Libor Sečka together with his Slovak counterpart L‘ubomír Rehák and Mrs. Veronika Tothová, the director of the documentary. The screening was followed by a reception at the representational hall of the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in London, during which both ambassadors congratulated Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines, MBE, an important compatriot and ‘Winton’s child’, on the occasion of her significant life jubilee. Following the reception, the screening was repeated due to high demand for those, who were not able to secure a space at the first screening.

The documentary ‘Hands on Glass’ depicts the creation of the so-called “Farewell Memorial”, which was symbolically created both in Slovakia and in the Czech Republic, and whose construction was initiated by the so-called Winton’s children. The Memorial is a copy of the door of the carriage in which the children travelled to England. The glass on the door carries imprints of hands- hands of the children on one side and hands of their parents on the other. It was ceremoniously revealed at the Main Train Station in Prague in May 2017.

Nicholas Winton saved 669 Jewish children, whom he transported away from the Nazi Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia via trains to the United Kingdom. The first train left Prague in May 1939. In most cases, the children’s families died during the war. The world became aware of this happening only in the 1980s whilst also learning the name of Sir Nicholas Winton- the last living member of the group of volunteers, who organised the rescue of the children. However, as he himself always emphasised, he was not the only one who organised the rescue of the children. Therefore, the documentary also mentions other members of this group, such as Marie Schmolková or Doreen Warriner.
