MFA Statement on the Situation in Venezuela

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic is seriously concerned about the current development in Venezuela, where more than one hundred people have died in recent months in the course of the opposition protests. We express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims, and we hope that ongoing protests will no longer be suppressed by inadequate means.

We consider the elections to the Constituent Assembly, which took place on July 30, 2017 a serious threat to democracy. We call on the Venezuelan government to try and find a way out of the current critical situation, to seek a solution through political dialogue with the opposition and to reestablish basic democratic principles and respect for law in the country.

We also call for the release of all those arrested while protesting as well as of all the political prisoners and for the restoration of their civil rights and freedoms.
