On 10th December 1948, shortly after the rise of the communist regime in our country, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document, defining general principles of free and dignified existence of individuals and the whole society, became the foundation for the later developed international law system of human rights protection. The importance of the Declaration was confirmed in the post-war period. Generations of people fighting for human rights refered to the ideas of the Declaration in countries, where they were not respected.
At the end of the 1980' of the last century the Declaration played an important role in moments of the final disintegration of the bipolar world and the end of communist totalitarian rule over its great part. The values of freedom and human dignity are not obvious in many places in the world even today. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights remains therefore a document of permanent validity.
The Czech Republic commemorates the anniversary of the
proclamation of the Declaration together with the world democratic
community and expresses its determination to continue to defend and
enforce the principles contained in the Declaration.
