The Czech Republic is interested in deepening its general relations with Portuguese-speaking countries that are associated in the Community of Portuguese-speaking countries (CPLP) made up of nine member states (Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, East Timor and Equatorial Guinea) with Portuguese as an official language and a population of more than 270 million people. Observer status of the Czech Republic in the CPLP obtained in November 2016 represents tools for further developing mutual relations with countries with significant economic potential. The Czech Republic's mutual trade with the CPLP countries has doubled in the last 10 years, reaching 1.5 billion Euros last year.

On Wednesday, April 24, 2019, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic hosted international conference “The Czech Republic and Portuguese-speaking countries: Present and Future of Cooperation” dedicated to the CPLP and its mutual relations with the Czech Republic. The conference was opened by minister Tomáš Petříček and addressed by representatives of Portugal, Brazil, Angola and current chair of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries Cape Verde and was attended by representatives of the business sector, state administration, academia and the general public. Minister of Foreign Affairs and Communities of the Republic of Cape Verde Luís Felipe Tavares followed up on minister Petříček and spoke about growing general cooperation among the CPLP members and highlighted the Czech Republic's active role in the CPLP. State Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Portugal Teresa Ribeiro also addressed the seminar while Executive Secretary of the CPLP Francisco Ribeiro Telles spoke to the seminar via short salutatory video address. The programme of the seminar continued with two panels focusing on mutual trade, wider economic relations and cooperation with Portuguese-speaking countries in the fields of education, science and culture. 

On the margins of the conference, minister Petříček received Minister of Foreign Affairs and Communities of Cape Verde Luís Felipe Tavares. Both ministers discussed deepening mutual cooperation in the political and economic spheres as well as supporting the development of the African continent. Minister Petříček appreciated the development of bilateral and economic relations. “The Czech Republic is interested in deepening its cooperation with Cape Verde in trade and investment. One of the areas is the tourism industry which offers countless investment opportunities for Czech companies. Cape Verde is a popular tourist destination for Czech citizens whose number is increasing every year."

On the occasion of the conference, Deputy Minister Martin Tlapa held bilateral meeting with the State Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Portugal Teresa Ribeiro. The discussion was primarily focused on development cooperation in Africa.
