This year the Czech Republic bet on the unique documentary mapping 14 years in life of a young junkie. 1996 is the first time the director Helena Třeštíková met Katka who was under the treatment back then. Katka is constantly set to overcome her drug addiction which keeps her away from a banal but happy life. Thefts, prostitution, physical and psychical violence pull Katka down and continue having the upper hand. Will Katka succeed in the end? There is only one certainty making itself clear throughout the film. Katka´s life story is an infinite battle of a young woman with herself. There is no other enemy except of her body and mind. 

At the start in the 90s there was no such intention of the director to get back to Katka regularly. Only later did Helena Třeštíková find this idea quite intriguing. The only script for the director is Katka´s own life. The documentary won awards at the festival of documentary films in Montreal, the East End Film Festival in London, and the Czech Golden Globe in 2010. Katka premiered in the same year and is currently used as part of anti-drug education and prevention in the Czech Republic being screened and discussed at Czech schools.

 

Annually, European films find their way into cinemas outside Europe to showcase the best of the recent European film production. Films screened at the festival have won various awards both in their home countries and internationally. The film festival is a great chance to keep track with the latest from European cinema.
