Ambassador Tomáš Smetánka met Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Zulkifli Hasan 17 February 2015.
MPR Chairman praised the state of relations between the Czech Republic and Indonesia and expressed the interest to strengthen them further, namely through the cooperation between both Parliaments. In this regard, he invited Members of the Czech Parliament to visit Indonesia. Mr Zulkifli Hasan also stressed the importance of people-to-people contacts between the two nations.
The Ambassador appreciated Indonesia as a key economic and political partner in South-East Asia, sharing with the Czech Republic common principles of democracy and human rights. He also commended last year’s elections that produced the new political representation of Indonesia and informed his interlocutor about the prospective cooperation in the areas of energy, transport, environment and defence. In the ensuing conversation, MPR Chairman condemned extremism, proliferating nowadays in some Middle-Eastern countries, and highlighted the peaceful and tolerant character of Islam practised in Indonesia, fully compatible with democracy and coexistence with other religions.
