A small scale project was successfully carried out in Yen Bai Province to improve access to safe drinking water in educational facilities located in a remote mountainous area. A kindergarten, primary school, and secondary school in the commune of Phong Du Thuong were equipped with modern, automated drinking water treatment systems based on membrane and osmotic filtration technologies.
The project was implemented by the Hanoi-based non-profit organization PHAD, which joined the Small Scale Projects Programme financed by the Czech Republic under its official development assistance for the second time.
The intervention took place in a mountainous community with a population of 6,495 inhabitants, predominantly from the Mong and Dao Nung ethnic minorities. The area is repeatedly affected by floods and landslides, which severely limit access to reliable and safe drinking water sources. The commune is home to three schools attended by a total of 1,597 students and staffed by 82 teachers.
The project was implemented between March and October 2025. The installed water treatment system consists of two interconnected modules. The first module treats raw source water using multi-layer filtration technology that effectively removes impurities, organic and toxic substances, while also softening the water. The second module produces drinking water suitable for direct consumption and operates on the principle of reverse osmosis.
As a result of the project, hygienic conditions in the schools have significantly improved. Students and teachers now enjoy uninterrupted access to safe, clean, and high-quality drinking water, contributing to a healthier school environment and overall well-being.
