In this novel from 1924 the author shows how dangerous the naive faith in progress can be. Translation of Čapek´s books is nothing new for Irma Pieper. In 2009 she translated the book „Obyčejný život/Ordinary Life“ and two years later she pursued with the novel „Válka s mloky/War with the Newts“. Irma Pieper ranks among the leading translators from Czech to the Dutch language in the Netherlands.

The presentation of the book will take place on 10th February 2016 in the Czech Centre Rotterdam. The film adaptation of Krakatit (1948) directed by Otakar Vávra will be screened on the ocassion, starring Karel Höger.
