As in previous years, the Czech Republic continues to implement its activities through the Czech Reconstruction Programme in the Middle East region, providing several tied financial donations (TFD) in the Kurdistan Region (KRI, IQ) in 2025.
This year, we have decided to support healthcare in areas that attract high numbers of tourists and therefore experience an overload of existing medical capacities, which are primarily intended for local residents. After careful consideration, it was decided to provide TFD in Soran, Akre and Zakho.
Once again, the donations focused on one-day surgery office, which, in cooperation with the Association of Manufacturers and Suppliers of Medical Devices, were installed and properly staffed by Comedeq s.r.o., including appropriate training for local staff. For those familiar with the realities of Iraqi Kurdistan, it needs little explanation why these three cities were chosen.
Soran is a renowned tourist and recreational area, where tens of thousands of Iraqis seek refuge from the relentless summer sun, with temperatures in the cities exceeding 50 degrees Celsius.
Akre is the heart of the Nawroz Kurdish New Year celebrations. However, this city is not just a one-day tourist attraction, but a year-round destination. Its breathtaking ridge walks with a staircase truly leading up to the clouds draws tens of thousands of tourists from around the world every year.
Zakho is an iconic town on the Khabur River, probably the most dynamically developing city in KRI, with its iconic Delal Bridge, Armenian church, and modern promenade along the banks of the Khabur River.
Together with Comedeq s.r.o., we headed on a three-day tour (16-18 September) of the above-mentioned towns and ceremoniously handed over the one-day surgery offices to the care of each hospital. We believe that, through the Reconstruction Programme, we have once again contributed to improving healthcare quality and increasing its accessibility in the KRI’s towns.
The Czech Consulate General in Erbil thanks all those who contributed to the implementation of TFD in KRI.
