The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Erbil (CG CR) is honoured to continue implementing Small Scale Projects (SSPs) on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic in 2025. This year, we have expanded our focus. We have traditionally supported education and have added access to drinking water.
On April 30th, 2025, CG CR inaugurated a project that provides a sustainable source of drinking water in Darkar (Zakho) district.
The project partner was Shingala Azad, a non-governmental non-profit organization working in Duhok governorate and the disputed areas of KRI/IQ. It directs its primary assistance to the Yazidi community, which was the most affected ethnic group in the Sinjar region during the Daesh period. Unfortunately, the harsh climatic conditions and the dire state of living conditions for IDPs persist to this day.
The project, entitled "Supporting the development of the Darkar area by providing sustainable sources of drinking water", aimed to bring drinking water to the people of the Darkar district directly from the water mains using modern technology. In the village of Darkar, a central water reservoir concentrates water from the surrounding 8 wells, which is then driven into the water pipeline using pumps. With the help of a modern water treatment plant inserted between the pumps and the water supply line, the water becomes edible. In addition, 200 metres of new piping have been added. This pipeline will provide water for about four dozen new houses being built for internally displaced people who can no longer return to their original homes.
The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the independent administration in Zakho and the belonged villages and NGO Shingala Azad.
CG Erbil thanks all those who participated in this SSP and wish the people of Darkar district that sustainable access to drinking water will serve them as long as possible.
