Renovation of a primary school in the village of Banda

As the second small local project of Czech development cooperation (MLP) in Iraq in 2021, the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Erbil implemented another renovation of a primary school, this time in the village of Banda, the mountainous region of Mangesh District, Duhok Province in the Kurdistan Region with a new implementation partner, the local NGO Alind Organization for Youth Democracy. The total number of primary schools renovated under the MLP has thus expanded to four.
 

A small primary school in the picturesque mountain valley of the Mangesh district, Duhok province in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region was ceremoniously handed over to the school principal on the International Children's Day, June 1, 2021, as one of two small local Czech development cooperation projects (MLP) in Iraq in 2021. The renovation of the school was implemented with a new partner of the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Erbil the local NGO Alind Organization for Youth Democracy.

The NGO Alind Organization for Youth Democracy carried out the renovation very carefully. Waste sumps, water distribution, boiler and toilets were repaired, new washbasins were installed. Damaged walls, doors and windows were replaced. The school and the school fence received a new colourful coat of paint. The inner courtyard was covered by a new roof, which created a useful covered space for children's school activities. This red roof became the new silhouette of the school visible from afar on arrival to the village.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Vice Governor of Duhok Province Mr. Shamoon Shlemon Esho, the Mayor of Mangesh District Mr. Brindar Haider, the Mayor of Mangesh town Mr. Adel Hannah, the Director of the School Department of Mangesh District Mrs. Fadia Abdulqaher, the Director of the Banda School Mr. Bakhtiar Lazgin, Mukhtar of Banda village and local priest. The opening ceremony was prepared by the director of the non-governmental organization Alind Organization for Youth Democracy Mr Alind Shirzad Mohammed and his colleagues.

Consul General Mr. Michal Svoboda presented the school principal with a book of Czech fairy tales, jumping ropes and soccer balls, and the children appreciated the distributed sweets. As part of the International Children's Day, children enjoyed fun activities and jumping rope competition.

The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Erbil plans to continue similar projects in the coming years. Positive feedback, including from children is a never tiring motivation.
