Bread for Internally Displaced in Iraqi Kurdistan

Small local project Khanike Bakery

On 30 July 2018, the grand opening of a bakery in the village of Khanike near the capital of the Duhok Province in the Region of Iraqi Kurdistan took place. The bakery named “Shingal Bakery” was built in the framework of the small local development project based on the agreement between the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Erbil and the local non-governmental organization Shingala Azad.

The largest number of refugees from neighboring Syria and internally displaced Iraqi population is located inside or outside the emergency camps in the Duhok province. Majority of the internally displaced people live outside camps being accepted by Kurdish host communities.

Excellent local bread from this bakery will be sold to the host community in Khanike for a discount price.

In addition, proceeds from the sales will be used to help victims of the attack of so-called Islamic state in the Shingal/Sinjar area in Nineveh province in northern Iraq in 2014. The bread will be provided to the displaced people of Shingal living outside the camps and children from orphanage in Khanike.

The grand opening of the bakery was attended by representatives of the Governorate of Duhok, town Semele town, Khanike village, representatives of the Barzani Charity Foundation and Consul General of the Czech Republic.
