Celebration of „Year of Czech Music“ in Denmark

On the occasion of "the Year of Czech Music 2014", the Czech Embassy in Copenhagen in cooperation with Copenhagen Festival Ensemble arranged on Sunday 28 September 2014 a concert of chamber music in Odd Fellow Palæet in Copenhagen.

At the beginning of the festive evening, the Czech ambassador Jiří Brodský welcomed the guests. In his speech he spoke about the importance of the year 2014 ending with the number “4” because traditionally, every year ending with this number is dedicated to Czech music. He also mentioned the national holiday 28 September on which the Czech Republic commemorates the patron of the country St. Wenceslas.

The concert program presented to the audience pieces by the most significant Czech composers – L. Janáček, B. Smetana, B. Martinů, J. Suk and A. Dvořák.

On the invitation of Copenhagen Festival Ensemble, two Czech musicians, violist Kristina Fialová and cellist Petr Nouzovský, performed during the evening as part of the ensemble.

Beside the concert goers and Czech expats, also personalities from the cultural, business and political life in Denmark and diplomatic representatives, attended this significant music event at the invitation of the Czech ambassador.

The Year of Czech Music 2014 is a celebration of important music anniversaries of more than 60 Czech composers, musicians and ensembles which the Czech Republic is commemorating at home as well as abroad.

Conductor Sir Simon Rattle and mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená, took the artistic patronage of the project. The honorary president is Jiří Bělohlávek, Chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Miloš Zeman, president of the Czech Republic gave political auspices.
