Press conference on CZ PRES on 11 July in Bucharest

At a press conference on 11 July 2022, Ambassador Halka Kaiserová presented the priorities of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which were determined primarily by the impact of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The conference was held in the presence of the Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu at the premises of the European Commission Representation. Minister Aurescu welcomed and fully supported the objectives of the Czech EU Presidency, especially in the areas of the economy, energy, cyber security, green transition and enlargement policy. The Czech Republic took the Presidency of the Council of the EU for the period from 1 July to 31 December 2022.

The Ambassador explained that the priorities of the Czech Presidency of the Council of Europe for the second half of 2022 were determined primarily by Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and its impact on the geopolitical and security situation in Europe. The Czech Presidency will therefore focus on five closely interlinked priority areas:

  1. Managing the refugee crisis and post-war reconstruction in Ukraine
  2. Energy security (REPowerEU, Fit for 55)
  3. Strengthening European defence capabilities and cyber security
  4. Strategic resilience of the European economy
  5. Resilience of democratic institutions

At the press conference, Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu welcomed the priorities of the Czech Presidency and underlined Romania's support in pursuing the Presidency's priorities to strengthen the European Union in the face of the many challenges it is currently facing.

The press conference was attended by representatives of television, radio, agencies and the press. In addition to the priorities, questions were asked about Romania's accession to Schengen and the Presidency's strategy for Moldova.

All member states of the European Union rotate the six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union regularly. The task of the presidencies is to set the agenda and priorities of the Council of the EU, chair its meetings, seek compromises between the individual states, and also to represent the Union in negotiations with other EU institutions and external partners. To ensure continuity, Member States form Presidency trios to prepare a common programme. The Czech Republic forms a presidency trio together with France, which held the EU presidency in the first half of 2022, and Sweden, which will hold the presidency between 1 January and 30 June 2023.
