On Friday 30 September, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marek Havrda met with State Secretary for European Affairs Daniela Gitman in Bucharest. In the context of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU, the two officials exchanged views on the Czech Presidency's priorities. State Secretary Gitman appreciated the Presidency's priorities, which are strongly influenced by the illegal Russian aggression in Ukraine.
They spoke about the security situation in the region, which has arisen as a result of the Russian Federation's war of aggression against Ukraine and which has been exacerbated by President Putin's announced decision to sign the so-called "agreements on the annexation to the Russian Federation" of Ukrainian regions illegally occupied by Russian troops.
The meeting was also an opportunity to exchange views on the priorities of the Czech presidency, with a focus on the EU enlargement process, energy and ongoing environmental transformation projects, as well as to discuss the future of Europe in the light of the conclusions of the Future of Europe conference which ended this spring. State Secretary Daniela Gîtman stressed that Romania supports the efforts of the Czech Presidency to find common solutions to the main challenges posed by the war in Ukraine and its security, economic, energy and humanitarian consequences.
